Learning slovene on your own - self-study textbook
with English explanations
The textbook Pot do slovenščine was created as a result of our long-standing
experiences in teaching the Slovene language. The textbook is designed for English
speaking learners of Slovene. It can be used for self-studying or as an addition to the
existing Slovene study material, especially when some additional explanation in the
English language is needed. The textbook is special for its precise and unique way
of teaching in the Slovene and English language, which enables the user to learn the
language independently. The textbook offers grammar explanation in a simple and
pragmatical way, a large set of useful vocabulary, a rich variety of pictorial material,
audio recordings, revision exercises and the answer key for an independent
knowledge testing.
The textbook consists of five units, The Alphabet and Numbers, Getting Acquainted
and Telephone Conversation, Personal Identity, Family and Free Time and A Flat.
Each unit is introduced through explanations and examples but followed by the
interpretation of grammar and vocabulary, which highlights some critical points in
language understanding and points to the most common mistakes in language
learning. In this section all the words that change their form due to declension or
inflection have their endings coloured in violet in order to simplify user's
understanding of grammar. This is pragmatically presented in tables. The appendix
is followed by some exercises through which the learning and revision take place.
This textbook is unique since all the instructions and explanations are translated into
English, and the words that appear here for the first time are also stressed (the
position of the stress is coloured red).
At the end of the textbook there is also a collection of pictorial materials that enable
the independent user or a teacher of the language course some additional spoken or
written exercise.
